Photographic Project Development - course work

As part of my course and a current module in this semester I started a blog about research, findings, thoughts about my plans and hopefully soon some evidence of practical progress regarding my next project. When I'm writing this I still don't know what that will be but hopefully I come to some idea I can work with.

Here it is:

Dialogue with Art - course work

A new module was waiting for me in the second year of my course - Dialogue with Art.

Unfortunately a short and fast paced module; I could really search for different inspirations and play with ideas a bit longer. Our task was to visit the Manchester Art Gallery and choose an artwork that can serve as an inspiration for a photograph to create by us. I looked no further when I saw this large scale painting, Sappho, by Charles-August Mengin. I was perfectly lost in the details and atmosphere of this image. My eyes found balance and beauty in the forms, highlights, shadows and every single small detail.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Drawing my inspiration from Charles-August Mengins's painting as well as reading about Sappho's life and her poems, I created an image of this mysterious character. On the original painting I was mesmerised by the details, Sappho's gestures, her dark surroundings and the single, sorrowful, sensual figure in the middle of the large scale frame.

Sappho, the poet who lived in the ancient times, in her poems reflected on love and yearning, life's pleasures and death.

The many uncertain points about her and her life also captured my attention and led me to compose my photograph with partly clear and in parts unclear areas.
